Civic Learning Description

Livermore High School’s Close Up program sends students to Washington D.C. each spring to meet with California’s House Representatives and US Senators. Students get an in-depth look at politics in action. Their AP government course and seminar focus on the study of general concepts used to interpret U.S. politics and provide students with in-depth focus on the US federal budget, federal bureaucracy, and other specific areas of public policy. Livermore High also mandates a civics course that pursues a deeper understanding of institutions of American government and focuses on civil literacy as students prepare to vote, participate in community activities, and assume responsibilities of citizenship.

Research-Based Civic Education Practices

  • Provide instruction in government, history, law and democracy, and avoid teaching only rote facts about dry procedures.
  • Discuss current local, national and international issues and events in the classroom, particularly those that young people view as important to their lives.
  • Offer extracurricular activities that provide opportunities for young people to get involved in their schools or communities.
  • Encourage students’ participation in simulations of democratic process and procedures such as voting, trials, legislative deliberation, and diplomacy.
