The Superior Court of Fresno County provides criminal and family law services from the Fresno County Courthouse. This 45-year-old building is shared with the County, with the court occupying approximately 77 percent of the total space. When the renovation of the B.F. Sisk Courthouse is completed in November 2010, family court functions will move from the Fresno County Courthouse into the Sisk building. Criminal court operations will remain in the Fresno Courthouse.

The proposed renovation will improve the safety, security, and functionality of the Fresno Courthouse as the court's primary criminal court facility. The renovation will include a seismic retrofit, upgrades to mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire and life safety systems, and improvements for accessibility under the Americans With Disabilities Act. It will improve security by

  • Enhancing secure circulation for court staff and visitors;
  • Providing a single point of public entry into the building with expanded security screening; and
  • Increasing capacity for in-custody holding in appropriately sized space.

The renovation will also relieve overcrowding in space used for court administration and criminal court support operations, with improvements to space vacated when the court moves into the Sisk courthouse. This will expand the court-occupied area to 88 percent. The project provides for the consolidation of one leased space currently occupied by the facilities department, training, and probate.

Indefinite Delay

In January 2013, due to the state's fiscal crisis and continuing cuts and redirections in court construction funds, the Judicial Council decided to delay this project indefinitely, pending resolution of the state budget for fiscal year 2013-2014. More information
