September is Attendance Awareness Month
"Suspensions, expulsions, truancy, and chronic absenteeism are linked to academic failure. They’re also a path to the juvenile and possibly the criminal justice system for many school kids," stated Chief Justice Cantil-Sakauye in her Aug 21 report to the Judicial Council.
At its public meeting on Aug 21-22, the Judicial Council approved a recommendation from its Technology Committee on a governance and strategic plan for court technology. The plan provides a structure and roadmap for technology initiatives and will increase the transparency and accountability of how funds are managed for technology projects in the judicial branch.
California courts have been cut by more than $1 billion in recent years. Despite this year's uptick in funding for the judicial branch, the 2014-2015 budget means there will be "more disappointment, service reductions, and delay for those who need our courts," according to Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye (full statement). After a nationwide search, the Judicial Council unanimously voted to select Martin N. Hoshino, Undersecretary for Operations at the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, as the next Administrative Director. He will begin work Oct 1, 2014.
