Courthouse Project to Be Discussed at North Tahoe Regional Advisory Council Meeting

What: The current status of the proposed new North Tahoe courthouse, currently in site acquisition, will be discussed at the next meeting of the North Tahoe Regional Advisory Council.

Who: The Administrative Office of the Courts, in partnership with the Superior Court of Placer County, will present project information, including the proposed site and status of environmental reviews.

When: Thursday, February 9, 2012, 6 p.m.

Where: Tahoe City Public Utility District Board Room, 221 Fairway Drive, Tahoe City

Why: The proposed project would replace the current Tahoe City courthouse, which is severely undersized and overcrowded and has numerous deficiencies in security, access, efficiency, and accessibility under the Americans with Disabilities Act. The proposed new single-courtroom building will provide adequate space for criminal, civil, traffic, and family law proceedings for Tahoe area residents, as well as self-help services and improvements in court security and court operations. The project is ranked as an “immediate need” in the judicial branch’s capital-outlay plan, making it among the branch’s highest-priority infrastructure projects. It is among 39 projects funded by Senate Bill 1407 (2008), which finances critically needed courthouse construction, renovation, and repair through a portion of judicial branch fees, penalties, and assessments, without impact on the state’s General Fund.
