Civic Learning Description

At Lake Canyon Elementary, the entire school is immersed in learning science through year-round service learning projects. An example in their afterschool program is the Environauts Club which “blasts off” and students learn about the science of reducing trash, while also leading a school-wide recycling effort. An example in the classroom, is students learning about bees and their plight, and planting Pollinator Gardens to help save them. Students learn English Language Arts skills and critical thinking by giving speeches, writing journal entries, and holding debates about the impact and importance of their these projects.

This school demonstrates the following research-based best practices in civic education:

• Discuss current local, national and international issues and events in the classroom, particularly those that young people view as important to their lives.
• Conduct community service that is linked to the formal curriculum and classroom (Service-learning).
