Civic Learning Award of: Merit
Recognized for: Enhancing student participation in the democratic process.

Civic Learning Description

At Eucalyptus Hills Elementary transitional kindergarten students are civically engaged with democratic processes by voting on such matters as changes to the school playground. These young students participate in school elections that largely resemble real elections. Through a collaborative effort with the community the school is able to use real voting booths in order to enhance the students’ voting experience. Elections are held school wide with each classroom becoming a voting district. Students practice self-advocacy and critical thinking while engaged in a real life civics experience.

Research-Based Civic Education Practices

This school demonstrates the following research-based best practices in civic education:

• Provide instruction in government, history, law and democracy, and avoid teaching only rote facts about dry procedures.
• Discuss current local, national and international issues and events in the classroom, particularly those that young people view as important to their lives.
• Encourage student participation in school governance.
