Marla J. Miller

Justice StewartJustice Miller was appointed to the California Court of Appeal, First District in November 2014 by Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr. She serves as an Associate Justice in Division Two.

Before joining the Court, Justice Miller served for more than 9 years as a judge on the San Francisco Superior Court, in both criminal and civil assignments, including the law and motion department.

Immediately prior to her appointment to the bench, Justice Miller was a partner at Morrison & Foerster LLP, specializing in complex civil litigation. She served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the criminal division of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of California, as well as Chief Assistant District Attorney in the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office. Judge Miller was also a director at Howard, Rice, Nemerovski, Canady, Robertson & Falk, where she served as chair of the litigation department.

Justice Miller is an officer of the Edward J. McFetridge American Inn of Court. She is a past member of many professional and community groups including the Judicial Council of California Access and Fairness Advisory Committee, the Bar Association of San Francisco Board of Directors, and the State Bar of California Committee on Women in the Law.

Justice Miller graduated from Harvard University in 1976, where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and from Harvard Law School in 1980, where she was an editor of the Harvard Law Review. Justice Miller clerked for Judge Charles M. Merrill on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
