Judge Ramona Garrett Appointed to the Board of State and Community Corrections

SAN FRANCISCO—Retired Solano Superior Court Judge Ramona Joyce Garrett has been appointed by the Judicial Council to a three-year term to the Board of State and Community Corrections (BSCC). The state agency was created in the wake of the criminal justice realignment reforms in 2011 and provides “leadership, coordination, and technical assistance to promote effective state and local efforts” in the criminal justice system. The Judicial Council provides one appointment to the 13-member BSCC board. Judge Garrett served 23 years on the bench before her retirement earlier this year.

Judge Garrett served in 2008–09 as presiding judge in the Solano court. She launched the court’s first drug court in 1996. In 2011, Chief Justice Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye appointed her to the Strategic Evaluation Committee, which conducted a comprehensive review of the Judicial Council’s staff agency.

A 1980 law school graduate of the University of California at Davis, King’s Hall, Judge Garrett began her law career in civil litigation before becoming a prosecutor, first in the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office and then the Solano County District Attorney’s Office, where she served as a chief deputy.

Judge Garrett is the recipient of numerous awards, including the 2010 Rose Bird Memorial Award given by the California Women Lawyers bar association.

Her term begins July 1, 2015, and runs through July 1, 2018.
