JusticeCorps Program and Data Evaluations, COS-2017-3LB

Update: June 5, 2017
Intent to Award

California JusticeCorps—a national service program administered by California Volunteers and sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service—offers a unique approach to addressing one of the most pressing issues faced by courts around the country today: providing equal access to justice. JusticeCorps is a collaborative project of the Judicial Council, Superior Courts of California, Counties of Los Angeles, Alameda, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara and San Diego; various University of California, California State University, and private university campuses; and community based legal aid services providers. Since it began in 2004, JusticeCorps has helped over one million Californians find access to justice.

Each year, the program builds on its legacy of success by recruiting and training 300 AmeriCorps members to serve people coming to court without an attorney—self-represented litigants who are trying to resolve crucial legal matters affecting their family, housing, personal safety, and financial stability. JusticeCorps members serve in court-based self-help centers in the Bay Area, Los Angeles and San Diego educating litigants on their legal options and potential outcomes. By providing neutral assistance—not legal advice—JusticeCorps members empower litigants to make the best choice for their particular case. Members assist self-represented litigants by helping them accurately complete legal forms; providing referrals to other non-court-based programs; and educating litigants about next steps and overall process to support them in continuing their case. The program provides access to justice regardless of income level, language, or socioeconomic status and helps litigants resolve their cases so they can move to a place of stability in their lives.
