Commissioner Shama Hakim Mesiwala serves as a juvenile court dependency commissioner for the Superior Court of Sacramento County. She also lectures at UC Davis School of Law, teaching students appellate advocacy and the fundamentals of the U.S. legal system.

Commissioner Mesiwala previously worked as a judicial attorney for the Court of Appeal, Third Appellate District. Prior to joining the appellate court, she worked as an attorney at the Central California Appellate Program and the Office of the Federal Defender for the Eastern District of California.

Commissioner Mesiwala volunteers her time at many community groups. She is cofounder/president/secretary of the South Asian Bar Association of Sacramento and sits on the Executive Committee for the Schwartz/Levi Inn of Court. She also served as a volunteer and acting director for the Legal Clinic of Yolo County, providing free legal advice to seniors and low-income individuals.
