First Amendment Cartoon Contest Winners Announced!
Six first-prize recipients from California, Illinois, and Michigan are the winners of the fourth annual First Amendment Cartoon Contest. Thirty finalists from California, Arizona, Arkansas, Hawaii, Iowa, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and the District of Columbia, received honorable mention. View the creative student illustrations of freedom of the press, freedom of assembly, and other rights guaranteed in our constitution.
Civic Learning Award Winners Selected!
See the list of twenty-two public high schools statewide that were selected to receive Civic Learning Awards. The new award program, co-sponsored by Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye and State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson, recognizes schools for engaging students in civic learning and identifies models that can be replicated. Listen to student speaker Diana Ledezma share what civic learning means to her. Hear about her involvement in mock elections and voting for the first time, as well as her work with elected officials to lead a clean-up in her South Los Angeles neighborhood. Ms. Ledezma is a Senior at Alliance Judy Ivie Burton Tech Academy, which won a Civic Learning Award of Excellence.
California Chief Justice Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye and a committee of civic leaders organized the Civic Learning California Summit to examine successes and barriers to increasing civic literacy in California. The event was filled to capacity and featured special guest U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor (Ret.).
