Division Eight: JUSTICE MADELEINE FLIER

Justice Madeleine FlierMadeleine Flier has been an Associate Justice of the Court of Appeal since September 2003.

She has a long history of public service. Justice Flier began her legal career in 1968 as a prosecutor in the Los Angeles City Attorney's office and rose to become the first woman Assistant City Attorney. During her career in the City Attorney's Office she tried numerous criminal cases and also represented the City in defending criminal convictions on appeal. In 1974, she was promoted to Chief of the Special Prosecution Division where she supervised four departments: Consumer Protection, Environmental Protection, Election Code Compliance and Special Trials. For three years she was legal counsel to the Board of Administration of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power's Retirement Plan dealing with pensions and benefits. In 1977, she served as the lawyer regularly advising the Los Angeles Police Commission.

Justice Flier was appointed to the Los Angeles Municipal Court in 1977 and three years later was elevated to the Superior Court. During the 26 years she served in the trial courts, Justice Flier dealt with the wide range of cases adjudicated by those courts. She presided over criminal and civil trials, trials of juvenile offenders, preliminary hearings involving criminal charges, law and motion calendars, proceedings seeking the court's assistance in protecting abused and neglected children and adoption cases.

As a long time member of the Board of the Los Angeles County Law Library she worked to improve library services to both lawyers and the general public. By appointment of the Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court, she served on the Judicial Performance Commission, the judicial disciplinary agency.

Justice Flier grew up in the Los Angeles area where she still lives with her husband. She has three children and four grandchildren. She enjoys reading biography and spending time with her family.
