2013 Summary of Court-Related Legislation now available.
On August 30, the Judicial Council submitted a mandated report to the Legislature that included detailed plans from each of the 58 trial courts to expend the $60 million augmentation in the FY 2013-2014 State Budget Act “to maintain or increase public access to justice.”

State Budget Signed

Bench-Bar Coalition Visits Legislators
The Bench-Bar Coalition’s (BBC) completed a two-day round of “Day in Sacramento” (DIS) legislative visits on Tuesday, May 21 and Wednesday, May 22, 2013. Over 40 BBC and Judicial Council members from around the state visited legislators and key staff at the State Capitol, while additional BBC members met with legislators for “Day in the District” (DID) office visits in May and June. Key messages included the need to reinvest in the judicial branch budget and the scope of impacts to the trial courts in the wake of devastating budget reductions. The recently completed Judicial Branch Budget Impact Snapshots were used extensively during DIS and DID visits to convey the depth of program and service reductions to the public.
Chief Justice Addresses Lawmakers
"We will never have a fully functioning judiciary when we are receiving one penny for every dollar of the general fund," the Chief Justice warned in her State of the Judiciary Address attended by branch leaders and members of the Bench-Bar Coalition.

Governor Brown delivered his annual State of the State address to a joint session of the Legislature on Thursday, January 24, 2013. Chief Justice Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye and judicial branch leaders attended the speech at the State Capitol in Sacramento.
Senate Race Decided, Special Election Set
Former Assembly Member Jim Nielsen (R-Gerber) won a special election on January 8, 2013, for the State Senate District 4 seat vacated by former Senator Doug La Malfa. Governor Brown announced a special election for May 14, 2013, with the primary election on March 12, 2013, to fill the Senate District 32 seat vacated by Sen. Gloria Negrete McLeod and the Senate District 40 seat vacated by Sen. Juan Vargas when both won Congressional seats in the November 2012 election.

Chief Justice Swears In New Senators (Dec. 3, 2012)
Chief Justice Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye administered the oath of office to 20 state senators on December 3, the first day of the 2013-2014 Legislative Session.

Pension Reform (Sept. 12, 2012)
On September 12, the Governor signed the California Public Employees' Pension Reform Act of 2013 (Stats.2012, ch. 296). The act reforms pension provisions for current and future state and local public employees and will become effective January 1, 2013. Click to read the Governor's announcement.
