CIP strives to ensure access to the courts for persons with limited English proficiency or those who are deaf or hard-of-hearing, by developing programs and practices that enhance the quality of interpretation and increase the availability of qualified interpreters in the courts.
Nomination Period Open for Court Interpreters Advisory Panel
The Court Interpreters Advisory Panel is currently soliciting nominations for certified or registered court interpreters working as employees in trial courts (Regions 2, 3 and 4), and a certified or registered Other than Spanish, Independent Contractor. Other membership vacancies on the panel are for a trial court judicial officer, trial court judicial administrator and a non-voting advisory position. The deadline for submitting nominations is June 30, 2013. The nomination form can be completed online or downloaded here.
The Judicial Council’s Court Interpreters Advisory Panel assists the Judicial Council with the advancement of language access to the courts. The panel makes recommendations to the council on policies and procedures including, but not limited to, interpreter use and need, certification, registration, and professional conduct.

On March 5, 2013, California begins scheduling registered interpreter candidates to take Oral Proficency Exams in English and each interpreter's non-English language. These exams are developed by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages and administered by our test administator, Prometric. Bilingual Interpreting Exams: Exams will take place August 20-22, 2013. Registration will open June 21 and the registration deadline is July 21.
