Barbara George Art & Writing Project

An annual art and poetry contest was created in 2003 to inspire children and youth to communicate their experiences with the California Court System. The contest, sponsored by, the Judicial and Court Operations Services Division, Center for Families, Children & the Courts (CFCC) was later named in honor of Barbara George, in recognition of her longstanding support of the project. The Barbara George Art and Poetry Contest generated a library of images that serve as lasting reminders of the courts’ commitment to children and youth.

The Barbara George Art and Poetry Contest has generated a library of images and text that serve as lasting reminders of the courts’ commitment to children and youth. We hope that more children and youth will add their artistic expressions.

The inaugural theme for the Barbara George Art & Writing Project, “My Dream for the Future,” recognizes 1963 as a significant point in U.S. history that forever changed the legal and social landscape of our nation.  The 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington and the 150th Anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation are events being nationally commemorated.

Our goal is to reach a variety of children and youth who have experience in the court system. This exciting art collaborative will be an ongoing effort and select submissions will be displayed at various CFCC sponsored trainings and events throughout the year as well as on the California Courts website. Selection of art and written entries for display will be based on originality/creativity, presentation, and representation of the theme.

We hope that you will post the flyer and encourage participation in the contest. Please feel free to photocopy the flyer and distribute it to any person or groups who may be interested in participating.
