7th Annual Youth Court Summit to Convene June 22-24
Rights, Respect, Restorative, Rewarding

SAN FRANCISCO—The seventh annual California Youth Court Summit will take place June 22–24, at Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park with the theme of Rights, Respect, Restorative, Rewarding. More than 170 are registered to attend, including 100 high school youth. The summit will provide an opportunity for youth, volunteers, judges and staff of youth courts, and education and youth-focused organizations to learn about and share best practices on areas such as juvenile court diversion, truancy prevention, and civics education.
The summit is produced by a collaboration of youth/peer courts, the California Association of Youth Courts, and the Judicial Council’s Collaborative Justice Courts Advisory Committee.
Assistant Presiding Judge David S. Wesley of the Superior Court of Los Angeles County and President of the California Association of Youth Courts, Inc. (CAYC) will make opening remarks. Keynote speaker Cary Trivanovich of Man on Stage will talk about bullying.
Workshops will be presented by youth from peer courts across California incorporating input from CAYC student advisory board members. Topics provide information on creative sentencing; educating youth about their rights; school suspension diversion programs; teen dating violence; and restorative justice. Other highlights include presentations on California foster youth, children of incarcerated parents, adolescent development and substance abuse, and DUI prevention.
More about youth courts is on the California Courts website. See here for directions to Sonoma State University. The event is open to the media.
