New Procedures for E-Filing and E-Delivery in the Court of Appeal, First Appellate District

New procedures effective May 1, 2013

SAN FRANCISCO - The Court of Appeal for the First Appellate District has adopted new procedures for electronic submission and electronic filing of documents that go into effect May 1, 2013.

The court will now require submission of an electronic text-searchable PDF copy of all briefs and writ petitions, in lieu of one of the otherwise required paper copies, at the time of filing.  Submitting an electronic copy will satisfy the requirement for service on the Supreme Court under California Rules of Court, rule 8.212(c)(2).  The court will also require parties to submit an electronic copy of all appendices, administrative records, and reporter’s transcripts in addition to the paper copies that are otherwise required under the rules of court.

The new procedures give court users additional guidance on use of the First Appellate District’s existing e-delivery system. The procedures provide direction on: civil and criminal/juvenile appeals, Wende briefs, writs, motions/notices, trial court records, service, filing format, and exemptions.

The new procedures and more information on documents that may be e-filed can be found at www.courts.ca.gov/9261.htm
