Judge Rupert A. Byrdsong, Los Angeles Superior Court, is appointed as an advisory member of the Judicial Council effective September 15, 2021 to serve a one-year term as the 90th President of the California Judges Association (CJA). He co-chairs CJA’s Task Force on the Elimination of Bias and Inequality in the Justice System and is a liaison to the California Lawyers’ Association.

Judge Byrdsong was appointed to the bench on June 18, 2014 by Governor Jerry Brown. He is currently assigned to a civil general jurisdiction department and was the first African American judge with assignments at the Chatsworth Courthouse and Complex Civil Department. Judge Byrdsong is a proud graduate of Morehouse College and Vanderbilt University School of Law. Prior to his appointment, he was a partner in the law firm of Ivie McNeill & Wyatt practicing employment discrimination law. In 2006, Judge Byrdsong served as president of the John M. Langston Bar Association, of which he is a life-time member. He is a founding member of the Association of African American California Judicial Officers and served on the Executive Committee of the State Bar’s Labor and Employment Section from 2003-2007.
