San Bernardino Juvenile Dependency Courthouse Addition and Renovation

Project Info

The scope of the project was the renovation and expansion of the existing San Bernardino Juvenile Dependency Courthouse in the city of San Bernardino. It provided 4,500 square feet for two courtrooms and support space including expansion of the clerk’s office and public lobby. The building’s expansion increased its total number of courtrooms from four to six. The project utilized the Design-Bid-Build delivery method. The existing courthouse hears juvenile dependency case matters for court service to all residents of San Bernardino County.

Background

Prior to completion of this capital project, the superior court had outgrown the San Bernardino Juvenile Dependency Courthouse owing to an increase in caseload. There was no room for growth within the former building footprint for additional courtrooms or support spaces, and the public’s entry/exiting and waiting areas for courtrooms and clerk’s office were insufficient for the volume of court users.

With the completion of the renovation and expansion project, and to the benefit of all residents of San Bernardino County, the superior court has improved operational efficiency, access to justice, and overall public service. It has addressed an increased caseload through two new courtrooms and support spaces; improved security for public entry/exiting; increased sizes of public waiting areas; and provided an expanded clerk’s office.

San Bernardino County is served by the superior court’s decentralized service model, with several court facilities in the city of San Bernardino and branch courthouses located throughout the county for regional service. The existing San Bernardino Juvenile Dependency Courthouse provides service countywide as the court’s main juvenile dependency facility. The facility is owned by the County of San Bernardino and is a shared-use facility between the court and justice partner agencies including the county’s Children and Family Services Department. The existing courthouse is located at 860 East Gilbert Street just outside of downtown San Bernardino.
