Council members are volunteers and do not receive additional compensation for their service. Most members are appointed by the Chief Justice, who serves as Chair of the Council, or by the State Bar Board of Trustees. Legislative representatives and advisory members also serve.
Most members serve three year terms and each year about a third of the membership rotates off and a new group is sworn in. See Judicial Council Governance Policies for details about membership.
