The Court of Appeal, Third Appellate District, continues to closely monitor the evolving COVID-19 coronavirus situation.  The court is following guidance provided by the Judicial Council, the Department of Public Health, and the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to limit the spread of the virus. 

In response to the recommendations for limiting the risk of exposure to the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), oral argument for the month of April is cancelled to be reset at a future date.  Further, the Court has obtained an Emergency Order from the Chair of the Judicial Council permitting it to issue an order extending the time to do any act required or permitted under the California Rules of Court, which it has done by Order dated March 23, 2020.

Any further updates will be communicated through the court’s website, both here and in Latest News below, as appropriate.

Due to the current and quickly changing circumstances regarding the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), the Court of Appeal, Third Appellate District, is postponing the Sixth Mediator Training Session, currently scheduled for May 2020, until further notice.

The Court of Appeal, Third Appellate District, is pleased to announce that it is again recruiting attorneys and retired judges to join its mediator panel. Attorneys and retired judges throughout the 23 counties served by the Third District Court of Appeal are encouraged to apply.

The appellate mediator training course is limited to 24 participants and provided at no cost to the participants. The mediator training will be conducted at the Judicial Council of California located at 2850 Gateway Oaks Drive, Sacramento, CA 95833.

Session One: May 21, 2020 (12:30 p.m.-5:00 p.m.); May 22, 2020 (8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.); and May 23, 2020 (8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.)
Session Two: May 29, 2020 (8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.) and May 30, 2020 (8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.)

Those interested in becoming a mediator for the Third District’s Appellate Mediation Program should complete the application, attach their résumé, and return it to: Rene´ Ackerman, Mediation Program Administrator, 2890 Gateway Oaks Drive, Suite 210, Sacramento, California 95833. Submission of applications may be received by mail, fax: (916) 641-6527, or e-mail: rene.ackerman@jud.ca.gov.

The deadline for submission of applications has been extended to March 13, 2020.

Recruitment: Appointed Counsel for Trial Court Capital Habeas Matters

The Third District Regional Habeas Counsel Committee invites qualified attorneys whose primary place of business is within the Third District to apply to be appointed counsel in capital habeas corpus proceedings in trial courts within the Third District. Appointed Counsel will be responsible for defending clients in habeas corpus proceedings related to death sentences in a superior court within the Third District. Responsibilities may include: building relationships with clients and their families; preparing and filing pleadings; analyzing and organizing evidence & other legal documents; following current developments in criminal law and procedure; working with other capital defense organizations in the state; and investigating and researching matters related to the case. 

In addition to the qualifications outlined in Cal. Rule of Court 8.652, the candidate’s principal place of business must be within the boundaries of the Third Appellate District.

Not all qualified candidates will receive an appointment. Appointments will be made by the trial court, when need arises. If qualified, you may also be added to the statewide list of qualified counsel.
